Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) also called Willis-Ekbom Disease. It is a neurological sensory disorder that causes an uncontrollable urge to move the legs, usually due to uncomfortable sensations.

What are the key features of Restless Legs Syndrome?

Urge to move legs, often with unpleasant sensations (tingling, crawling, aching, burning, pulling). Worsens at rest, especially in the evening or at night. Relieved by movement, such as walking or stretching. Sleep disruption, since symptoms often interfere with falling or staying asleep

What are the causes & risk factors?

Primary (idiopathic): Often runs in families (genetic component)

Secondary causes:

  • Iron deficiency / low ferritin.
  • Pregnancy
  • Chronic kidney disease.
  • Peripheral neuropathy.
  • Certain medications (antidepressants, antipsychotics, antihistamines).

What are the causes & risk factors?

  • Clinical, based on history (no definitive test).
  • Polysomnography (sleep study) may show periodic limb movements.
  • Bloodwork (ferritin, kidney function) may help identify secondary causes.

What are treatment & management of Restless Legs Syndrome?

  • Regular sleep schedule.
  • Avoid caffeine, nicotine, alcohol.
  • Moderate exercise.
  • Warm baths, massage, stretching before bedtime.
